I was reading Philippians this morning and read a verse that I’ve read many a times in my life but today it kind of stopped me and got me thinking.
Philippians 2:12-13
I often find myself trying to rely on my own wisdom and strength (which always causes me great disappointment because I’m far less wise and far weaker than I realize) and not relying on God who works in us to “will and to do” what He wants us to do. Even as a professor of the reformed faith I forget that God is sovereign over my sanctification and I really ought to pray along the lines of this verse. I fully realize my responsibility to do what I ought to do (see the first half of the stated passage) but it’s so easy to forget the last half and try to “work out my own salvation” by myself.
The great thing about this passage is the fact/promise that God works in us when we do what we are suppose to be doing, namely, “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Actually, as I’ve found, God graciously works in us even when we aren’t doing what we are suppose to be doing!
Praise God for His mercies.
